MEMBERSHIP

Membership in NADOI is open to anyone who can demonstrate the required experience and expertise as an obedience instructor.

NADOI offers two entry-level categories of membership, Certified1 (full membership) and Provisional (limited membership). Provisional members may not vote, nor may they hold office, but they receive all the publications and other benefits of membership. If you are granted Provisional membership, you will be required to submit semi-annual professional development progress reports; you will have three years in which to meet the Certified membership experience requirements and to pass that membership exam.

  • Annual Dues - $70 per year for Individual or first Family member
  • Each additional family member in same household - $35.00
  • Non-refundable application fee - $75**

Optionally pay your Application fee with Paypal (includes convenience fee)
** Note: completed application form must be sent to the Administrator within ten (10) days of payment.

An applicant for Certified membership must have

  • At least five years' experience in dog obedience training
  • At least two years as a full-charge instructor
  • Worked with a minimum of 100 dogs
  • Group instructors must have taught at least 104 class hours; private instructors 288 hours.

Provisional membership may be offered to instructors who lack the requisite instructing experience and are otherwise qualified as per the provisional entrance exam.

Each applicant's qualifications are evaluated on the basis of an extensive written test which may be supplemented by personal interviews, observation, or a video (DVD or Online) which the applicant may be asked to provide. General knowledge of dog behavior is evaluated as well as the ability to deal with specific training situations. Training methods are examined and evaluated for behavioral soundness. Finally, teaching skills and overall integrity are considered.

Additional Certifications

Application for additional certifications may be made in six month intervals, but no earlier than six months after being approved for full membership. An additional 52 weeks of instructing experience at the level of the sought-after certification is required for an additional certification level.  Additional certifications currently offered by NADOI are Puppy, Novice, Open, Utility, Tracking, and Basic Agility.
